We're Moving!!As I pestered earlier, for some unknown reason which I have tries for three months to get resolved (thank goodness I had several scheduled posts), this blog has been disabled through Blogger.com. Weird-right? I can post here on the Blogger App but it is very limited. I would like to change the format, add resources as I learn more about this media application, which I find I am unable to on the app. Anyway... Our new location is <span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 19px; white-space: nowrap; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "><b><u>http://tinaatkinson.blogspot.com/ </u></b> and it is called Antzmaniacs....continued.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW0GmoKGoY3VzFloeXAuD39wY0-Epm8OyvN0tYpYmYkcMsOLrQtbRSJUk5uR3oI9cvcUJhDUG99ynM43O7GvfcLlqYmDhgFsID4wxpCi3iXBig4QJPnzU8dU8do_DrTEcfQPj1YMqQy0lm/s640/blogger-image-1068048029.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW0GmoKGoY3VzFloeXAuD39wY0-Epm8OyvN0tYpYmYkcMsOLrQtbRSJUk5uR3oI9cvcUJhDUG99ynM43O7GvfcLlqYmDhgFsID4wxpCi3iXBig4QJPnzU8dU8do_DrTEcfQPj1YMqQy0lm/s640/blogger-image-1068048029.jpg"></a>See you there!!</div></span>Tina Atkinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16291944243712401271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5698272912630417652.post-69270450212071518172013-08-27T20:43:00.001-07:002013-08-27T20:46:24.351-07:00All AmericanHere is a new take on an old favorite! Our district and city collaborate on an art-inspired month known as Artober. All the schools create displays inspired by the chosen artist that is on display that year in the city. This year's artist is Norman Rockwell. Well, I learn my lesson last year that I can only stand the same artist for so many hours per day so Rockwell is inspiring grades 3&4 while K-2 focus on Americana. Who better for Kinder than Jasper Johns!? We looked at the American flag and studied the shapes and colors. This was a great time to do it as they are learning the Pledge of Allegiance. We looked at Johns work as well as some state flag designs with the red,white, and blue color scheme ( Tennessee, Hawaii, Texas, Georgia and Mississippi). Students were asked to design a new flag using the same colors but different shapes or composition. The results were all American! For brush practice I rescued some patriotic sheet music my music teacher was recycling an had the brush the glue on. To glue the strips onto the paper. The next week we painted our designs over the strips so that our flags had hidden messages when you looked closely. I can't wait to display them!!<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdNmZiUUjtRuFCISbq5lTNgjarMTJ3yzYSlsK-tyoOB1fXjEKV3oCddRoYma_Ok-kFwGtaIXCXLrcdMo26IB_ygJyqFbHf74KG3b_4n5zHpNcG52Ps2boje0cvF28wZX76rIkudIyXyjqc/s640/blogger-image-2119401992.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; What could I do, I wondered....then it hit me...FugleFun! <div>I loved Tricia's Newsweek cover that students created on the iPad (Drydenart.weebly.com) so she coached me a little and I came up with PPE Tiger Beat!! We are the Tigers after all. I used Doodle Buddy ( I like Sketchbook express better.) to teach them to erase the background. I used a template created in Keynote and Dropbox to store work in progress! The teachers chose a prop that told something about their personality to have in the picture. For many, it served as an inspiration for the titles. </div><div>The finished covers graced our staff board to welcome students back with the title, "We've Got The Beat!" Needless to say, it was a hit!!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyF-6pUZ2u4I5cV_jQ-fPvFRSZiQaXa2CAgeWRo0-0mCPcH6wA1DwA9Pz0NhzTO50KQGieFYWYMIpXjuVaUshE3IiUOgWLgrNNJzAB0mcxu9wAujcDKTkIycl2bfU9cA4xerJLYEgsgxzz/s640/blogger-image-1713825591.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; This was a project I did for my church's VBS. Our theme was Kingdom Rock, Kids Standing Strong for God. So as the "art lady" I chose several activities that were somewhat medieval that we could do in 20 minutes or less. This was on the day that "Friends and Family helps us stand strong". We talked about who gave us our names and how some children were named for someone in their family or a close family friend. Some students were named after friends from the Bible too. They created their names similar to illuminated manuscripts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once they were finished we pinned them to a king size flat sheet like bricks in a wall because walls "stand strong". The wall hung in our church the week after VBS and the following Sunday students could collect their names on the way out of mass. It is a great way to show how many children participated in VBS and for the parishioners to see what the parish children are learning and creating during VBS through art. The children were so proud of the work they did and they loved find and see his or her name on the wall! </div>

I can teach anything I want with what ever I want.<br />
<br />
This year one of the things we made were Memory Bottles. I discovered a book by that title and fell in love. The story is about a boy who's elderly neighbor has a mysterious shed. I love the illustrations of all the beautiful forms.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwS_zDkolw5Cpxr8ZQJi5ODKikua8leIdTywcMKVWFNnCDZdaow9EhRc5WuaK4MiTvj2_jL2unHA_LeCdaCaHbLl0AY9lgYkWVL8rIlOrLb1C2UhbHfd8CVHSAJJdGWSMlrV3ajjeQHTVv/s1600/IMG_0006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwS_zDkolw5Cpxr8ZQJi5ODKikua8leIdTywcMKVWFNnCDZdaow9EhRc5WuaK4MiTvj2_jL2unHA_LeCdaCaHbLl0AY9lgYkWVL8rIlOrLb1C2UhbHfd8CVHSAJJdGWSMlrV3ajjeQHTVv/s320/IMG_0006.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We used Cloud Clay with a form inside, such as paper cups or leftover yarn cones, just what ever I had that seemed to match the children's form. They coiled around the form to create the bottle and created a fancy "stopper" for the top (if they wanted to). Before the bottle was closed they put a memory inside. This could be done with his or her imagination ( a thought was caught in the bottle) or by writing the memory down on paper and sealing it in the bottle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once the bottle was dry-ish, which takes a little extra time because the moisture is trapped inside, they were painted with Acrylic Glitter medium mixed with liquid water color. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
First let me say that I am not a lover of contests when it comes to art. I do not care for poster contests and trash art contests whose themes are often shallow and superficial. But this last spring break I read about a contest that truly inspired me. It was sponsored by Americans for the Arts and American Girl Doll and the directive was to create a collaborative work of art with students that shows how art is at the center of learning, or how art is valued in your school. Five volunteer fourth grade students served as our creative core and we started creating our mural installation.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> <span style="color: #232323; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px;">“Our mural is about how art is all around us.” Mallory explains to a teacher as we install our work in the library. “See how the seeds spread and turns into ideas? Art is like that. It is everywhere.”</span></b></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Teachers often comment about how excited learners are when they have the opportunity to be creative and expressive in the classroom. With so many high-stakes tests, most schools are pulling out of the arts, but our school is committed to making sure our students are the best, the brightest and the most creative by supporting the arts program.</span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The national winner of the contest will receive $10,000 for his/her school, so it was a gamble I was willing to take with my time. But, like they say, "Many will enter. Few will win." We will have to wait until October to find out the results but we already feel like winners. The principal showed the installation on the morning video announcements and recognized our creative team for their efforts.</span></div>

Hero Portrait QuiltsThis enduring theme was Heroes. I launched this unit with 4th grade to get them to look at character. At the time I taught this unit, our school had a group of students that were bused in from one of the toughest housing developments in the city. I targeted them, but I really wanted all my students to think about what made a "true hero". I wanted them to see that just because someone is famous or rich does not necessarily make them a hero. You know what I am talking about. A beautiful voice or face does not make you a hero, a beautiful soul and a giving heart does. How do you teach that?<br />
<br />
Students made a list of people they thought were heroes. Then we came up with a definition of what a hero is, as directed by the students. Then they took another look at the list of people they had made. They were surprised to cross out their favorite celebrities and to add parents, neighbors, teachers, coaches.<br />

We created felt no-sew portraits by layering felt. They brought in or I printed images of the people they wanted to honor. When the quilts were assembled (I don't sew so we used tacky glue.) they hung for Youth Art (March) in the hallway that connects the Tennessee Tower (where our law makers have their offices) with the TN Capitol building (which they walk through every day that time of year). The smaller "quilts" contain coordinating paragraphs that match the portraits explaining who is depicted and why the student considered that person a hero. We were scheduled to take a field trip that March to visit the capitol and see the quilts installed but we were snowed out.<br />

As you may have guessed I took the felting workshop today, which was one of three amazing art-making opportunities. Encaustic and mixed media where the other two offerings and I wish I could have done all of them! But, life is all about choices so let me share some of my "handy work" with you. </div>

The sponge was used under the felt so we could poke it with the very sharp needles, which magically connects the wool fibers to make quite a strong connection. Plus it is really fun (I know, "fun" and "cute" should be banned after this post but is was so...both!!). The needles are ridiculously sharp so don't look away or even talk too much or you will bleed all over your project. When I figure out how to safely do this with my elementary kiddos, I will let you know. In the mean time I will be looking for another felting class to take. Yes, Troy, you have created another addict!!</div>

Here is a great Elements based lesson that I use with kindergarten but you could easily do it with pre-K or first. I have done texture plaques for year. It has been in the curriculum in some form or fashion for as long as I have been teaching and I have taught it a number of ways, but this year I found a way to get three times as much out of this unit, a win, win, win situation!</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn191L211DrTAQent7BUpA86X5Joi87A-Um3yJIeVhb6fgqny1MpDD2-b5eyXaH5H9K1GbdRFx8mFEj26i_NvAoWK-Sb5OT5CDfq7e5ud-roetDxgekKPTKUoUgirPadwk2WozqaxfKCZ0/s1600/IMG_3377.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn191L211DrTAQent7BUpA86X5Joi87A-Um3yJIeVhb6fgqny1MpDD2-b5eyXaH5H9K1GbdRFx8mFEj26i_NvAoWK-Sb5OT5CDfq7e5ud-roetDxgekKPTKUoUgirPadwk2WozqaxfKCZ0/s320/IMG_3377.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This book is a fun way to get young ones thinking about and looking at texture. It shows extreme close up of everyday items and asks you to guess what they are (the answers are in the back).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then students pressed a variety or found objects and stamps into a slab of clay. I happen to know that my kindergarten teachers stash these lovelies away and use them as Mother's Day gifts from the children, so this year, I added a twist. I made the clay slabs the way I usually do, by rolling the whole 25lb bag to make a large round-ish cylinder and then slicing them like refrigerated cookie dough using the wire (about 5-6 inches across). I had the students start texturing in the middle, introducing radial balance. When they were finished, I cut a hole out of the middle using a uniformed cookie cutter shape. </div>

Red Grooms was our Arts-tober artist of 2012 and all of the schools in our district were asked to create displays in October showcasing creations inspired by the artist and his process. The fact that he was a Nashville native was a big hit with the students, who knowing he is still living, expected him to drop in on our class or art shows at any time. I hope he does one day, how delightful would that be!!<br />
<br />
I always start the year with Identity in 4th grade and this year was no different. I launched my unit but the results were anything but routine! What is identity? How do artists show identity? Why do artists create portraits of themselves and others? We discussed not only why artists created portraits but how they created them. We discussed and explored how the medium and mood spoke to viewers about the identity of the person portrayed. Then we explored Groom's process.<br />

Then it was cut out and traced onto a card stock. I used file folders because I had a ton and they had a good base skin color. You can make it darker and I have never seen a race lighter than a manilla folder. :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Cut out the card stock outline and glue it down onto a stiffer board. I had a cash of matt board. Then add the eyes on a white paper. Cutting out the eyes was done by the teacher, a rotary blade does nicely. rolled and X in each eye as students were ready and they thought it was hilarious! They could get their scissors into the opening to cut out the eye shape, trace it onto the white paper and glue it down.</div>

Finally you are ready to assemble. I love 3D-O's by Scratch Art. You can use the circles and then cut apart the webbing for more bang for your buck! I am very stingy with them and only allow 3-4 per layer.</div>

This construction took about four weeks to complete and I see them an hour each week. In Arts-tober, all of the portraits went to the local Regal Cinema 16 in Green Hills for the 4th grade Art Show. Every 4th grader's portrait was on display that month. And appropriately spooky for October, as you walked through the show, every eye in every portrait followed you! </div>

What an amazing experience! The participants were at the Memphis College of Art on a Saturday to be professionally developed in all things assessment.<br />
<br />
I planned the activities with the idea of <i>Experience before Label</i> in mind. (Kudos to you if you recognize that Quantum Learning Key!) Anyway, I have sat through my share of "lectures" so I thought my fellow elementary folks would enjoy a little music, a little hands on and a whole lot of assessment!<br />
<br />
I modeled an Identity unit I developed several years ago in response to a Pop Art exhibit at our local museum. Designed for 4th graders, students explore the concept of Identity by looking at everyday objects and symbols. This lesson stretches the student's idea of what a self-portrait is beyond just the physical characteristics of the artists. By looking closely at non-traditional self-portraits as well as the work of Andy Warhol's use of repetition and variation. Embedded in this unit participants used idea books, essential questions, check lists, rubrics, and student self reflections. The feedback was very positive so I have decided to submit this model to NAEA 2014! Here are some of the work-in-progress that teachers created today! Imagine 100 Soup Can Self-portraits hanging together! The portraits, like people, look the same from a distance, but up close you realize that each one is an individual! Our students are not just numbers, a brick in the wall, they are people, each unique individuals.<br />

So, what did I learn? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>I learned that I love teaching art teachers!</li>
<li>Well crafted units get the same response not matter what group you teach it to and that was just plain fun to be a part of!!</li>
<li>I have something valuable to share and so do you. </li>
<li>We all find our voices in different ways at different times and maybe I have found mine. </li>
<li> Being an ostrich (head in the sand) or a gazelle (running away) about scary stuff like assessment will not help you master it. By accepting the challenge, taking risks and trying something new, even failing, you show yourself and your students that you are a life-long-learner and you are not afraid to learn from your mistakes. What a great way to teach our students grit!!</li>

I found this idea in the January 2012 edition of School Arts called "<i>Building a Better Robo</i>t". It was great...it was like a summer blockbuster movie, it had everything! Stamping with found objects (cheap, right?), elements of a landscape (at least the way I taught it), drawing, chalk, into to perspective/space, core review of the planets in our solar system, storytelling and imagination. It was a great find so I taught it to my 1st graders last year and it was a hit!<br />
Well, this year I had an iPad and know how to use it, so I did. I borrowed some iPads from one of my first grade teachers who is very tech-y (Thanks Mr. Tanner!) and went to work. I photographed all of the backgrounds and robots before the classes came in and put them into Dropbox (I am so new at this I didn't even think it would work). I showed the kiddo's how to use an app called <i>Puppet Pals. </i>They imported the stamped robot as the actor and the background as the, well, background and then recorded a puppet show that gave information they wrote on their Mission Report, two facts about the robot and where it was "tested".<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzQkDfAcJx42xMtcvXiii7WdcoZn0EuzXnGH6Ojil6V1sjQ57snaVzTSBYUv12gz1sygKCUHfO4vqcblJBy' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
What did I learn:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li> You need more than one iPad for sure and having control over the iPads for pre-work more than five minutes before the kids come in is really helpful. 1:2 worked for me (2 kids per 1 iPad)</li>
<li>You can export from quicktime to iMovie but not from Dropbox to iMove, that I know of-I'm new.</li>
<li>Six year olds still love to make funny noises especially when they are being recorded and the ones who will not be quiet during class to save a life will be the same children you can not hear on the video!</li>
<li>I have a big mouth- I can hear my own yapping in almost every video- I need a silent quiet sign for recording.</li>
<li>Everyone else is loud too...I we need to have a sound studio or a "recording zone" so that people don't get so much background noise in the recordings.</li>
<li>I hope this video shows- If not I will repost...did I mention I was new at this? </li>
</ul>
<div>
I can say this, I am proud of my first attempt at bring iPads into the art room and I really did learn as much if not more than the kids did! (I even taught my tech-y teacher friend a thing or two that I discovered!) Woo-Whoo! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Stay Art-Z my friends!</div>

I couldn't email the presentation that I used at this year's NAEA conference in Fort Worth because of it's size, but I have had a lot of requests for it. It has a lot of great visual examples that will be showing up on my blog soon, but in the mean time, here it is! I posted it on my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Assessment-in-the-Elementary-Art-classroom-presentation" target="_blank">Teacherpayteacher.com</a> page. Don't worry, it's free!<br />
TpT is a great site for resources if you haven't checked it out yet. I have used it to get ideas. For a dollar or two you can find some amazing, teacher-made resources. (It is kind of like a consignment sale.) You know what they say, time is money! Sometimes you have time to modify but not create and there are a lot of free things. The first thing you post has to be free. And it is free to sell too...you could earn some money for extra supplies!! Just saying!<br />

This is all thanks to American Painter, Wayne Thiebaud! <br />
We have been on an media expedition. We drew still life, printed still life, collaged still life, embossed still life, and sculpted still life! Of course it was our favorite treats so there was no fussing about the subject matter! This year I finally figured out what big idea best fits this unit...memory! Food, like so many other sensory experiences is tied to memories. We talked a little about why these were our favorite snacks and students told me stories about that special thing that dad only makes on camping trips, or a special outing with grandma that ends in a treat. These memories are great ways for us to connect to the the world around us and even makes me find value in still life!! My plan is to as the students to include their memories in their artist statements after spring break to make this unit come to a sweet conclusion! <br />
<br />
<br />
PS - I'm trying out the Blogger app while I'm on the road and I don't have much control over the format, but I included a link to a Sunday Morning segment. I wanted you to know what it was I case it came out longhand. ;) <br />

Art Teachers invaded Texas this week and it was a sight to behold!! I met so many amazing art teachers. The week was inspiring, informative and exhausting in that incredibly rewarding way. I really want to say thank you to everyone who came out to see my presentation and those who stopped me to share positive and encouraging thoughts. You did not run screaming from the building and you crossed <a href="http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/hph01" target="_blank">Hell's Half Acre</a> to find my location on the other side of the area!<br />
<br />
So, what did I learn?<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>First, I learned some things from Super Blog-Star, Mr. E, that I can do to make this Blog more interesting or more helpful to others. I hope you will offer comments to help me grow in this area as well. </li>
<li>I learned fun art-making tricks (cheap and easy) from some of you and vendor-sponsered educators to incorporate more processes into my classroom</li>
</ul>

This is the time when <i>March Madness</i> refers to everyone scrambling and cramming for "the test". I am gearing up for 3rd quarter report cards and heading to NAEA next week to present some things on assessment (<i>Assessment tools for the Elementary Art Classroom</i>, Thursday at 2:00pm if you will be in Fort Worth) so I thought I would get warmed up here first.<br />
<br />
One tool I like to use in my classroom is an Idea Book. This is the new cover for next year. I found it helpful to add the table designation to save time. That way when I'm passing them out I just need to look at the table instead of finding each child by name. I can also have them out on the table when they come in without have 25-30 seating charts memorized.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzI4TYe3SvszHflNWpYYpQ_5BPda_H_lxna8gMFRWjcBGkfBzAOKqZ3YjLkQKkG4nQALu5pHay49CjB3R_X6gpPgnhRJlOGinYywWyMLHr6SAlpjuWmOXI47paF7MsVyy5-vdzlWjJnKUW/s1600/IMG_0845.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzI4TYe3SvszHflNWpYYpQ_5BPda_H_lxna8gMFRWjcBGkfBzAOKqZ3YjLkQKkG4nQALu5pHay49CjB3R_X6gpPgnhRJlOGinYywWyMLHr6SAlpjuWmOXI47paF7MsVyy5-vdzlWjJnKUW/s320/IMG_0845.PNG" width="241" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I teach 1st-4th using enduring themes whenever possible so I only use the idea books with these grade levels, not with Kindergarten. When I intro a unit, I usually start with questions. I type these up and print them out (usually 2 or 3 sets to a page so it is less copies). This saves time because the children are not copying from the board which uses valuable class time. This also diversifies the instruction because students can see the question in front of them, on the big screen as well as hear/read it. We do our practice sketches in this book too. They are super cheap to make. I use 5 sheets of 11x17 with one colored sheet for the cover. Fold it in half with two staples on the fold and you have a super cheap idea book, color coded by grade level with 10 pages, or 20 front and back! It's use creates a portfolio of thinking and shows how students grow both in process and over time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The idea book becomes the pre-test and the completed work is the post-test to show student growth. Another way that I gauge student growth is by using student self-assessment or reflection. This comes in many forms but my favorite for its speed and simplicity is a checklist.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0ZKnRzA4RVwWLAH6jQxe2Dy3Z7aRZrw2MLB9kVNkLQ1KEpXNypESc4KUk3tgRNZy4FhxMn86GTOdgclIbM5DcKUKJjAGvxvaAhXwEuK8huxZy2B1Ezu4bq1PlgHW2YWKUbuR2A_TPbqAI/s1600/IMG_0843.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="249" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0ZKnRzA4RVwWLAH6jQxe2Dy3Z7aRZrw2MLB9kVNkLQ1KEpXNypESc4KUk3tgRNZy4FhxMn86GTOdgclIbM5DcKUKJjAGvxvaAhXwEuK8huxZy2B1Ezu4bq1PlgHW2YWKUbuR2A_TPbqAI/s320/IMG_0843.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In this example I give students four "I" statements and they respond "yes", "sort of" or "no". This helps me to understand if the students recognize and can use the weaving vocabulary in written and verbal form. I observe the verbal in class while the rug is being created as well as listen to them while they fill out the student evaluation. This is a first grade example so I do read through the statements with them to be sure that lack of reading skills does not keep them from showing what they know. At the bottom I added a matching section for students to recall the process of weaving. This worked better than last year when I had them number the statements.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also use fill-in-the-blank with first and second. This is another first grade example. I know it is harder to picture it with the younger ones. In this<i> innovation</i> unit, students designed a "robot" and stamped it with found objects. The robot had to be specifically designed for a planet or location in space. Students then created an outer-space landscape using markers and pastel and glued in the robot where it made the most sense on the picture plane. They love this one- they have a chance to tell the viewer what the robot was designed to do and what changes need to be made to the design, if any. The mission report is a quick way to allow students to reflect on what they have learned and created through art. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also use Artsonia.com, the online student art gallery. It is amazing to see the growth and progress over the years. Of course we have no way of storing a self-portrait each year for five years and even if we could some of our schools are so transient that you could never keep track of them all. This way, Artsonia archives all the work for you. Here are two portraits by Maggie, one in Kindergarten and one in Third grade. It is amazing to see the growth there!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">First you should know that I love Jim Dine! His work is so fun and kid friendly. He uses everyday objects and recognizable shapes to create works of art. His pieces often have bright colors and repetition. Like I said, fun and kid friendly. We focused on his many works featuring hearts because my kindergarten student's have an art show opening this week at our local Regal Cinema. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq_l_DHf4zN0xY8nCRTSfk2gfBNkWLLLRfpNaorOSEZgMu-qU4ACWjGmLFqsKyk7-5hRrEJeCDCpsfoPGz9RDOpFNL-ptOkXV1N3ywRYb3gbMfwTOp-aDS1Y2j3wUsNuUJB80dGZj6fDxq/s1600/IMG_3431.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq_l_DHf4zN0xY8nCRTSfk2gfBNkWLLLRfpNaorOSEZgMu-qU4ACWjGmLFqsKyk7-5hRrEJeCDCpsfoPGz9RDOpFNL-ptOkXV1N3ywRYb3gbMfwTOp-aDS1Y2j3wUsNuUJB80dGZj6fDxq/s320/IMG_3431.jpg" width="239" /></a><span style="text-align: center;">So, how did we do it? First we reviewed mixing tints and introduced warm and cool colors. Students painted tints of cool colors on dark blue paper and with the white added it really makes the tints pop! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">Then the students drew three hearts. We talked about scale and how one should be much larger than the other. Once they were draw we reviewed patterns (great early math skill!) and they created patterns using only warm colors. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: center;"></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Finally, we talked about balance and focal point (using the largest heart and showing if they understand the size relationships). Students arranged the hearts to create visual balance. They could overlap (which is introduced) or use position on the picture plane (move the hearts up and down).</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">

<br />
It is called a Valentine Lei (parent app.com) but I have come up with a couple of applications for it. <br />
<br />
Tomorrow we will make them with the 3-4 year olds in my Sunday School class as " prayer necklaces". I wrote something that we should remember to thank God for every day. Our life and all living things, family, friends, the love that Jesus taught us and our good health are the five I chose. I wrote life, love, family, friends and health and they will add drawings of other things that they are thankful for on the backs of the hearts using crayons.<br />
<br />
I found some milkshake straws (they are huge) which makes getting the yarn through the straw much easier for younger children who are still developing that fine motor and hand/eye coordination. I suppose you could use rigatoni noodles as well if you couldn't find the milkshake straws. I didn't even know there was such a thing and they are so cool that I am going back to Big Lots tomorrow to buy them out!!<br />
<br />
I also lone the idea of using other shapes besides hearts! I thought this would be a great shape lesson for Pre-k and k. I will have them cut 4 or more geometric shapes and then string them together. The little ones love art you can wear! I did this with my almost 4 year old at home. We went on a "shape hunt" to find things that were circle shaped ( paper towel roll) square/rectangle ( blocks) and so on. We traced the shapes on colored paper and cut them out. I punched the holes and she put the necklace together. She loves making patterns (shape-bead-shape-bead) which is a great early math skill too. <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCejLlOJSCmSnUrmyE3AWdAqxIa_ZCbcVKJabcWTVEaTg41-uQOdAn4MM8hOWtPDbzX0PuROoDP4optupGC7KRD_vKEDm5XCmqfNAgXdcjpJj3DCS0o8NFhv4sVgqYXuY9QEuXeVPFOFjk/s640/blogger-image--226215178.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCejLlOJSCmSnUrmyE3AWdAqxIa_ZCbcVKJabcWTVEaTg41-uQOdAn4MM8hOWtPDbzX0PuROoDP4optupGC7KRD_vKEDm5XCmqfNAgXdcjpJj3DCS0o8NFhv4sVgqYXuY9QEuXeVPFOFjk/s640/blogger-image--226215178.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM1AXOJH4F_gFo6Yr35gtSkH5wvY2KEVMRmG39-QTHaxYm3UAw2XvnW8Gc-ZsvNDqRY0zlNNMZOYkmkYApJtJNSeitETg5dPoY4Caxz1AxQYfO8_bFsI74p1NRAZB27VBDlPARas1Nhwx5/s640/blogger-image-1006510393.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM1AXOJH4F_gFo6Yr35gtSkH5wvY2KEVMRmG39-QTHaxYm3UAw2XvnW8Gc-ZsvNDqRY0zlNNMZOYkmkYApJtJNSeitETg5dPoY4Caxz1AxQYfO8_bFsI74p1NRAZB27VBDlPARas1Nhwx5/s640/blogger-image-1006510393.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqiUfTd44FGW-WTCNiNHlR7otujBPv_g20QzMp_lQpHWkWQ3mCCHqckt-9V-n4qgsj5GKSTagwwy2lFXgbuYR_DBQPyGcLsjJCgFriQBCti34ixPWf_CmK3Ccd6hZbqjJDg5YwGCipt96l/s640/blogger-image--721671716.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqiUfTd44FGW-WTCNiNHlR7otujBPv_g20QzMp_lQpHWkWQ3mCCHqckt-9V-n4qgsj5GKSTagwwy2lFXgbuYR_DBQPyGcLsjJCgFriQBCti34ixPWf_CmK3Ccd6hZbqjJDg5YwGCipt96l/s640/blogger-image--721671716.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2fW20ss6odWGhDilwMxmvK73CpqguYrsU2YmKB63LoUtMnrfnK5l1lHbdpSUinp_tcP2jtaDf6eZKMmBg3fVNefjLms5OFbP5vMaXjjXQ7hA6cIeLR1wuzzi4kCx6rO81F2wuAtMBIEH7/s640/blogger-image-1891766519.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2fW20ss6odWGhDilwMxmvK73CpqguYrsU2YmKB63LoUtMnrfnK5l1lHbdpSUinp_tcP2jtaDf6eZKMmBg3fVNefjLms5OFbP5vMaXjjXQ7hA6cIeLR1wuzzi4kCx6rO81F2wuAtMBIEH7/s640/blogger-image-1891766519.jpg" /></a></div>Tina Atkinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16291944243712401271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5698272912630417652.post-87619819788778456722013-01-31T21:31:00.000-08:002013-06-05T20:01:18.678-07:00Teaching Structure: Charles Clarey inspired Paper Sculptures<h2>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Have you ever heard of a paper sculptor named <b>Charles Clary</b>?</span></h2>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">( <a href="http://www.designaside.com/2861/arte/percusiveart-charles-clary#" target="_blank">http://www.designaside.com/2861/arte/percusiveart-charles-clary#</a></span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The "paper cut" I made in the TAEA workshop.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well, I literally stumbled upon him a few years ago at an art crawl here in Nashville. Later that year I attended a workshop offered by TAEA and he was my teacher! After that, I was hooked! I love the bright colors and organic shapes and think it is a great way to teach collaboration and installation with young students. I am doing this lesson with third grade and it is a favorite.</span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH4mOH5wfAxvrjXUX_q8R0HC7hwuc7qJ1yOWlUG-ERVQYE8dS5as54kpqpBygjF-w47YuWEJfGjhZg9u6odV8wVmHmGO2OhyphenhyphenLTlEEasOFiihKo_HNpinyav5gXhYFXJipJs628WD890fee/s1600/IMG_3368.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH4mOH5wfAxvrjXUX_q8R0HC7hwuc7qJ1yOWlUG-ERVQYE8dS5as54kpqpBygjF-w47YuWEJfGjhZg9u6odV8wVmHmGO2OhyphenhyphenLTlEEasOFiihKo_HNpinyav5gXhYFXJipJs628WD890fee/s200/IMG_3368.jpg" width="148" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">First we begin the discussion about <b>structure</b> using our idea books. I ask the students to think of as many geometric shapes as they can and draw them. Geometric shapes are shapes that can be defined mathematically, but for this exercise we looked at any shape you could name, squares, circles, even chevrons, and 3-D forms. Then we talk about what the word "organic"means, defined it, refined our definition for art and came up with "irregular shapes". These shapes are most often found in nature but are to varied to be named.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2UzdJmKMuY_OprrCk8JTmrriSwtGUWgTtKXnAdldVvFgAkox_ocTkGkqFtyvPgTUSCiKZVjJVxUUe12odJh5PfawlhYq5V7brsCoI8RSNovYrpCLB0ljw9b9PagK4ju-KVBI5IuDxEch7/s1600/b26a235a0eb8fe763543ef81e6ba2706.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="background-color: white; color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2UzdJmKMuY_OprrCk8JTmrriSwtGUWgTtKXnAdldVvFgAkox_ocTkGkqFtyvPgTUSCiKZVjJVxUUe12odJh5PfawlhYq5V7brsCoI8RSNovYrpCLB0ljw9b9PagK4ju-KVBI5IuDxEch7/s320/b26a235a0eb8fe763543ef81e6ba2706.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Then we learned about <b>Charles Clary</b>. We read an article in Wired (2010) and looked at his construction methods and installations. I focused on the "towers" and students began to cut intuitive organic shapes (no drawing first!). On the back , students marked each piece with their initials and the number it would be in the tower (TA-1, TA-2 and so on). This helps to remember which side will be up as well as which piece goes where. Once they had created 3-10 pieces that grew in size, we connected them with 3-D O's. These are amazing! They are basically pieces of foam core with adhesive on both sides. I use the O's and then cut up the "spaces" and use them too!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Once the towers are completed and assembled, the students deposit them on a large class organic shape that I have cut. We gather around the table and discuss balance and scale. It is no longer about "your" tower, now it is about how all the pieces fit together! Once assembled and balanced we take the finished class piece out into the hall way and "install" it on the wall. As each class finished our installation grows. It is an exciting process to watch!</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> This is only three of our five classes installed. This thing will spread down the wall like that nasty stomach virus that has been going around...viruses are one of the phenomena that inspires Clary's work...but ours is beautiful and less likely to make you sick!</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>Assessment:</b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So, how do I assess this...well, this is one of those short, building units so I don't do a written assessment (assessment is my nemisis and has therefore become my new best friend). I do a lot of observation. I can see in the idea book exercise how many geometric shapes they can generate and anything more than eight shapes drawn is excellent. I ask them to practice drawing five organic shapes before I ask them to cut. I model and look for good craftsmanship in cutting and assembly. I watch how they collaborate and use vocabulary while arranging the towers and how they interact with each other. These observations show understanding and growth, the evidence is in the idea book pages (pre-test) and the completed class installations (post-test). They have shown that they can draw, cut, describe and identify organic shapes as well as differentiate between organic and geometric shapes.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
UPDATE:<br />
Here is the final result! This instillation includes all five third grade classes. It was finished this week!<br />

<b>Well, I did it!</b><br />
This is it, my first post. I have been saying for years that I need to start a blog. There are a lot of reasons to start a blog and I have read and reviewed many different kinds, but this blog is about art. I have read a lot of blogs and discovered that there are a lot of things that I didn't know or ideas that I had never thought of before. That really got me thinking...Hey! Maybe I know something that would help someone else too!! Something so routine to me that I never thought it worth sharing. Some of those things have changed the way I do things for the better, so why not try to pay it forward!<br />
<br />
<b>So- why should I listen to you-crazy lady?</b><br />
I have been teaching elementary visual art since 1998 which makes children and their art my passion. I have a BS in (well, bs, some would say, but officially it's in) Art Education and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Visual Arts- Early/Middle Childhood (which is ages 3-12) and I am certified to teach in both Tennessee and Pennsylvania (Art K-12). I serve on many (too many sometimes) committees and boards for local museums, art and educational organizations. I have presented and facilitated workshops for art teachers locally and nationally. Now, I don't tell you all this to brag but to give you a little info on my background so that what I share has some credibility, and so that you know that what I share is standards/research based and, well fun!<br />

<b>Are you in the right place?</b><br />
Well if you are an elementary art educator, you are in the right place! I am also a mom of two young children so I love doing art with them as well. I have had people from church members to pre-school teachers ask me for art ideas and I really think this is the best forum, so if you are an artsy person with children in your life who wants to do art at home for fun or homeschooling, you are also in the right place! This blog is for all of you "Art Maniacs" out there so if you are crazy about art and sharing the creative process with children, this is the blog for you!
